7th Period
Prerequisite: Livestock Production, Small Animal Management, and/or Equine Science
This course provides training in the veterinary assistant field. It will include animal handling and restraint, health and safety, sanitation, surgical preparation, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, infectious diseases, instrument and equipment identifications, laws and ethics, and veterinary office procedures. The class will cover companion animals as well as livestock. As part of the curriculum, instruction is provided to assist students in practicing communication skills, utilizing listening skills to follow directions, practicing basic mathematics skills as applied to a veterinary medical setting, and reading to gain information, and to perform assignments and tasks as directed.
Students will experience hands on work with various small animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, etc...) and will cover everything from grooming to giving injections. This class must be taken before Practicum in Veterinary Medicine.

Reading Grade: 5%
Daily & Quiz Grades: 50%
Major/Test Grades: 45%

First 9 Weeks Average: 40%
Second 9 Weeks Average: 40%
Comprehensive Final: 20%

Class participation includes being active participant in classroom lecture, discussion, and activities. Daily grades include worksheets, handouts, hands on activities and other assigned material/work. Test will consist of both oral and written test.
*A course fee of $20 is required for equipment and labs in this class.
