Advanced Animal Science

6th Period

Prerequisite:  Junior or Senior Status

This course helps prepare students for careers in the field of animal science, students need to attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire knowledge and skills related to animal systems, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry standards. To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. This course examines the inter-relatedness of human, scientific, and technological dimensions of livestock production. Instruction is designed to allow for the application of scientific and technological aspects of animal science through field and laboratory experiences.

Students will be expected to complete an Ag Science Fair project as a requirement of this course.

This class will include:

(1)  At least 40% lab activities
(2)  Using the scientific methods and equipment during field and laboratory investigations. 
(3)  Using critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving to make informed decisions within and outside the classroom. 
(4)  Evaluating the employability characteristics of an employee. 
(5)  Demonstrating principles relating to the human, scientific, and technological dimensions of scientific animal agriculture and the resources 
        necessary for producing domesticated animals. 
(6)  Applying the principles of reproduction and breeding to livestock improvement. 
(7)  Applying the principles of molecular genetics and heredity. 
(8)  Examining and comparing animal anatomy and physiology in livestock species.
(9)  Determining the nutritional requirements of ruminant and non-ruminant animals.
(10)  Evaluating animal diseases and parasites.
(11)  Defining how an organism grows and how specialized cells, tissues, and organs develop. 
(12)  Recognizing policies and issues in animal science. 
(13)  Discussing livestock harvesting operations.
(14) Exploring methods of marketing livestock. 
(15)  Developing an advanced supervised agriculture experience program as it relates to agriculture, food, and natural resources. 



*This will count as your 4th Science credit if taken your senior year or as a junior in conjunction with a 3rd Science credit
