Practicum in Veterinary Medicine

4th Period

 
Prerequisite:  Veterinary Medical Applications

This course provides further training in the veterinary assistant field.  It will include animal handling and restraint, health and safety, sanitation, surgical preparation, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, infectious diseases, instrument and equipment identifications, vaccine preparation and injection techniques, laws and ethics, and veterinary office procedures.  The curriculum will provide instruction to assist students in practicing communication skills, utilizing listening skills to follow directions, practicing basic mathematics skills as applied to a veterinary medical setting, and reading to gain information, and to perform assignments and tasks as directed.  This course will include an internship designed to allow students to gain hands on experience working as a veterinary assistant.  Students are expected to find their own clinics and attend for a minimum of 8 hours per week.  Students will receive 2 credits for this course. 
Students will need to purchase scrubs to wear to their clinic.


*A course fee of $20 is required for this class.  If the student would like to join FFA or be on the Vet Med Team they will need to pay $30 for FFA dues.


*At the end of the course students can take a test to become a Level I Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA).  If the student plans on doing this, they must pay a $125 fee in addition to thier course fee.  This willl not be accepted after October 1. This test can not be modified!
